Surviving the Holidays After Divorce

November 15, 2019

The holidays can be a rough time for the recently divorced. Annual celebratory routines have come to an end and it can be particularly tough when children are involved. The Plunge recently explored some solutions for making it through.

Move on from old traditions by starting new ones. If you used to spend holidays with your ex’s family, think about creating a new activity with your children, or start a “Friendsmas” or “Friendsukkah” celebration. If your divorce was financially draining, instead of incurring debt on expensive gifts or travel, you might look into volunteer opportunities. Helping others often brings joy and is a great way to bond with those close to you and give back to your community, not to mention sets a great example for your children. You never know what exploratory ventures might become your new cherished annual traditions.

The piece also notes that it is important to be willing to accommodate your ex’s traditions, especially if children are involved. It will create a mutually respectful coparenting relationship, especially for when it’s your turn to ask for leverage on a tradition or holiday that you want to enjoy.

While the holidays can be challenging after a divorce, embracing them with a positive attitude can make all the difference.
